Checklist for hiring

The first requirement to determine the need for a new or replacement employee. Assuming that there is a need to a candidate, here are some items for your checklist:

1. Think outside the box

Can you accomplish the job without adding staff?
This may require a team effort and the review of all procedures. Can you outsource any functions? Are all existing team members fully engaged?

2. Focus on position/role outcomes

List the key outcomes you expect from the position. Rather than focus on tasks, focus on the outcomes you expect the person to achieve and how they will assist you achieve your business goals.

The 'outcomes' can then flow into a better on-line job advertisement and focus candidates on your objectives. A task focus runs the risk of defining boundaries rather than team work and a results focus.

3. Money - Package

Give consideration to the salary range for the position and pay attention to the non-financial rewards and benefits.

4. Post the job on www.jobs4careers.com.au

Load the position onto www.jobs4careers.com.au and send the link to all team members, your personal network, and suitable referrers.

Consider social media and other sources. Depending on role, alert schools and universities as well as other places you have previously found good team members.

5. Respond quickly to candidates

How you respond, and the promptness of your response, communicates a lot about your business. It sets the scene for how you treat staff and what they should expect from your business.

6. Shortlist and conduct telephone interviews

Screen the applications and resumes against your objectives/criteria. Then telephone interview the candidates that appear to be a good match and will fit into your team. This process will often quickly sort out the short list and provide a smaller list for full interviews.

7. First Interview

The first interview is a fact finding process for both you and the candidate.

We refer you to the www.jobs4careers.com.au on-line resources covering interviews.

Next steps include:

  • second interviews
  • personality and skill testing
  • reference checks and other forms of validation of qualifications, skills, and experience

Again, we refer you to the on-line resources at www.jobs4careers.com.au for both employers and candidates.

Enjoy!
